It can refer to anything! The King James Version of the Bible, on which this study is based, uses the expression to denote different generic classifications - from crawling animals ('creeping things') to events that have happened or will happen ('After these things...'). In Genesis we learn that God created living things, including creeping things. But when man thought evil continually God wanted to kill them all off. In the end He decided to save two of every kind in the ark. That way, once the flood was over, they could multiply and God gave them as food to Noah and his family. Other material 'things' mentioned are the precious things given to Rebekah's family by Abraham's servant, the things under Joseph's care in prison and the good things from Egypt that Joseph sent to his father Jacob. Genesis is packed with stories - tales of love, deceit, faithfulness, intrigue. These extracts tell of incidents in the lives of four generations, from Abraham to Joseph. Indeed every other 'thing' is an event or happening, sometimes good sometimes bad. For example when Sarah told Abraham to banish Hagar and Ishmael, this thing was very painful to Abraham as Ishmael was his son. God told Abraham not to do anything to his son Isaac once he showed that he was willing to obey God even by sacrificing Isaac if required. When Abraham's servant returned to Isaac after a successful visit to Haran, he joyfully told Isaac all the things he had done. Jacob refused to accept anything from his father-in-law Laban. He would rather receive all the odd-coloured animals from Laban's flocks and herds. When the sons of Jacob heard that Shechem had raped their sister Dinah, they were furious that he had done this intolerable thing. Again when Potiphar's wife tried to seduce Joseph, he cried out that his master had witheld nothing from him except his wife. But when Joseph suggested Pharaoh appoints a wise and experienced man to prepare for the seven years of famine, this thing seemed like a good idea to Pharaoh and his officials. All scripture is for our instruction. The passages from Genesis that refer to some 'thing' that has happened can help us to appreciate the way God's interventions together with personal choices thread through the lives of Bible characters, as indeed they do through our own lives. The ultimate result may be disaster, as with say lustful Shechem, or success, as in the case of faithful Joseph. |
