Notes

In this study on Jesus Christ we trace every scriptural appearance of Jesus, that we may fully understand that there is no other name under heaven whereby we may be saved.

Although originally the Father communicated openly with mankind, after Adam and Eve sinned there was no longer direct interaction between the Father and His people. John tells us that it is Jesus Christ who declares God the Father. The Father speaks to us through His Son.

And so after the fall of man, all contact was through the Son of God, Jesus, who was to be the Son of Man. So when the Godhead interacts with His servants in the Old Testament, it is in the Person of Jesus the Son, though He was not yet so named.

The gospel, the plan of salvation, was given to Adam and Eve by Jesus immediately after they sinned. The Redeemer, offspring of woman, would crush the serpent Satan’s head, for the Godhead was not willing to let go of man. Adam and Eve fully understood that a Saviour would be born through a woman, and every faithful mother, from Eve on, hoped that she would be the mother of the Saviour.

It was with Abraham that God began to define His intentions. The Lord promised Abraham the blessing of the Saviour to come, from his seed, his descendants.

After a long life full of incident, at ninety nine years of age Abraham and Sarah finally had a son whom they named Isaac. God promised that He would make an everlasting covenant with Isaac, through the Redeemer his descendant.

The system of sacrificial offering of a lamb was already in place to remind man of the manner in which the world’s Saviour would pay for the penalty of sin. It was with amazement that Abraham accepted God's request that he make an offering of his son as the sacrifice. Abraham obeyed but God intervened and provided Abraham with a ram, a substitute for his precious son. Thus God provided through Abraham a living example of what He was to do through His Son for man's salvation.

Again God promised Isaac that his descendants would become a great nation through whom all the nations of the earth would be blessed.

Isaac prayed that God would pass on to his son Jacob the blessings of being ancestor to the Saviour. And God confirmed this promise to Jacob many times, saying that his descendants would be kings.

In his old age, Jacob prophesied that the blessing of a saviour would come through his son Judah. The sceptre would not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the coming of the One to whom it belonged, the One whom all nations would honor.

And so we see the plan of the Godhead unfolding. The promise of a saviour was given to Abraham and passed on to Isaac, to Jacob and to his son Judah. Jesus would come to save mankind from his sins. Hallelujah!

The Promise of a Redeemer

Gen.3.15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Gen.9.27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

Abraham - The Path of the Redeemer

Gen.12.3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Gen.15.1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
Gen.15.7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
Gen.17.1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Let it not be grievous in thy sight

Gen.17.19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
Gen.18.18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
Gen.21.12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. Abraham mournfully walking away from Ishmael, his son, as Ishmael’s mother Hagar walks him into their desert exile. Sarah, Abraham’s wife, looks on.

How the Redeemer would come

Gen.22.1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
Gen.22.2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Gen.22.3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
Gen.22.4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

Behold the fire and the wood

Gen.22.5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
Gen.22.6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
Gen.22.7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
Gustav Doré (French illustrator 1832-1883), captures some of the poignancy and fearfulness of the situation in his etching, "Abraham and Isaac climb Mt. Moriah" (1866).

A living example

Gen.22.8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
Gen.22.9
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
Gen.22.10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. Gen.22.11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
Gen.22.12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
Gen.22.13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
Gen.22.14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
Gen.22.18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

From Abraham to Isaac

Gen.26.4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Gen.26.24
And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

Behold, the LORD stood above it

Gen.28.4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
Gen.28.13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
Gen.28.14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
  Jacob's Dream

From Jacob to Judah

Gen.28.15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
Gen.31.11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.

In the visions of the night

Gen.35.11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
Gen.46.2 And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.

I am God, the God of thy father

Gen.46.3 And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:
Gen.49.10
The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
